The battle of organic SEO vs Google adwords
Ok, so I know what you’re thinking. An SEO agency talking about which is the better option, SEO or adwords, obviously they’re going to say SEO. At least I hope that’s what you’re thinking. That’s the smart way of looking at it.
I was looking for answers to see which is the better option, organic SEO or good ol’ Google adwords. And ironically enough the articles that showed up were extremely biased. A SEO company throws out numbers of organic searches getting more clicks. And a adwords company throws out numbers of sponsored ads getting more clicks. But, we’re smarter than that, we can’t let biased opinions sway our decision making.
So this post is aimed to be as unbiased as possible. I’m the type of person who is always looking to prove myself wrong, this way other people can’t.
So even though I started an SEO agency, I’m always thinking what if SEO is not the way to go. What if adwords is the way to go?
So I decided to weigh them against each other, see the pros and cons and go from there. I’ll talk about each individually, give you the way I see it, and hope that you come up with your own conclusion.
Pros: Instant 1st page results, you don’t need to be as patient as in SEO, you can create your ad today and people can see it on the 1st page tomorrow.
Cons: Doesn’t stay there, if you stop paying for ads your site will stop appearing. Your competition can cost you money. Since you’re paying per click, your competition can click your ad over and over and waste your money.
Pros: An asset for the long term. Once you get your site to the top of page 1, it will take more effort from your competition to beat you out. Free traffic, you’re not paying for clicks so when people click on your site, every click is free.
Cons: Takes time, it takes a lot of time and energy to get Google to know your site exists and then to move it all the way to the top of the search results. Constant changes in Google’s algorithm, Google’s always making changes that could penalize your site and move it down in rankings.
Did that leave you even more unsure of what to choose?
See, it can get complicated and difficult to choose between the two. It’s really up to the mentality of the company owner and the goals they’re looking to accomplish.
The reason I chose to provide SEO services is because I’m a long term thinker. I don’t necessarily look to win right now, I want to win in the end. I didn’t like the idea of having to continue to pay ads to get noticed. I really liked the idea of building an asset that’s on the 1st page of Google and delivering free traffic to me and my clients.
Some things almost scared me away from SEO. The biggest one was Google’s constant changes, I didn’t want to waste all this time and energy increasing my sites rankings, only to have it fall down because Google wants to make changes. However, I found a solution that makes me sleep easier at night. I found an exclusive community of SEO’s where we work together and help each other. Over the last 2 years, this community hasn’t seen a Google change that we haven’t figured out in 48 hours or less. That’s huge and was a big deciding factor in taking my SEO agency very seriously.
Here’s my closing thoughts: as long as you do it right, you can have success with organic SEO and Google adwords.
