A lot of owners hurt themselves because they focus more on how much they have to pay instead of how much they will get. For example it makes more sense to spend $30,000 to make $100,000 than it does to spend $15,000 to make $15,000. So the question to ask around cost is what will this investment make me, not what will this investment cost me.

No target. There’s nothing more important in marketing than knowing what you’re aiming at. The saying goes if you’re marketing to everyone you’re marketing to no one. For example a lot of owners will pay for billboards or tv commercials, or advertise online to people in their area. But this is very broad, not everyone needs your services. The best way to market is to find someone who needs your services. That’s one of the main reasons we chose to do SEO. It doesn’t get much more targeted then someone searching for your exact services and finding you.

Zero knowledge. It doesn’t make much sense for you to hire a SEO agency if you have no knowledge on SEO. You obviously don’t have to become a master, but you need some basic knowledge. Will you build citations? How will you utilize social? What type of backlinks will you send? These are all very important questions to ask your SEO agency. Same goes for any other online marketing. How will you target on Facebook? What keywords will you go after on adwords? Make sure you’re studying and asking the right questions.

Fearing the unknown. It can get kind of scary when forking over money for a marketing campaign. The important thing to understand is there are no guarantees in life never mind marketing. And everything in marketing is a test. So the best thing you can do is prepare. Prepare by researching. Accumulate the efficient knowledge, trust your gut, and most importantly have faith in your decision.

Think short term. Listen, you’re in business because you want to be successful for years to come, not just successful tomorrow, right? You see this all the time with owners, they want to see an ROI right away. They want their business to grow right away. But more important than succeeding today is succeeding tomorrow, and the day after. For example, a lot of people will choose adwords over SEO, because with adwords you’re site can be seen on page 1 right away. But when you compare adwords and a successful SEO campaign, you always spend more with adwords, and you lose out on the long term success SEO brings. Because once you stop paying for adwords, your site is no longer seen. But when your SEO campaign is done, it can continue to be seen for a long time.

Act like they hired an employee and not a firm. The right marketing firm is a legitimate business. And a legitimate business isn’t desperate to work with you. They choose to work with you, that’s a huge difference. It’s natural for people to be impatient, and I see it all the time with business owners constantly checking in and basically micro managing to make sure the agency is doing their job. That’s just the wrong way to go about it. Obviously you want to make sure they are getting work done, but there’s a far better approach. Ask them how often they will update you on work. A good firm will send you monthly or bi weekly reports showing the work that was done, and the results that were created.
